When did you first start CrossFit? Introduced to it years ago, but officially taking part in it a few months ago.
What is your favorite exercise? (The Snatch)….It’s Poetry-in-Motion.
What is your least favorite exercise? Burpee Box Jumps………I curse them.
What is your sports / fitness background? High school wrestling, Triathlons, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Surfing.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Met Cheryl (Owner) many years ago at another gym and was pulled into doing a WOD.
Describe your first WOD. Were you scared? Excited? How did you feel after you were done?
I certainly was intimidated. The clanging of the bars, the climbing rope, ring dips…along with the finely-tuned physiques. It made me rethink what I was doing there. After my first WOD though, I was addicted…obsessed on how to make my next WOD better. I limped for a week, totally sore. But strangely I grinned and enjoyed it.
When did you know something had to change before you joined Desert CrossFit?
I was not getting better in my Jiu-Jitsu and was often getting tapped out for lack of conditioning. I looked in the mirror and didn’t see the athlete I remembered. I was a fatty and needed to make a change.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF?
The first day at Desert CrossFit, I adopted a Paleo eating lifestyle and banished all my bad foods I was accustomed to eating. To date I have lost 43lbs and 6 inches off my waist and feel great. I’m always looking to improve everyday.
Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join Desert CrossFit?
My diet has changed drastically. I have become more aware of what fuels the body. Before CF I ate anything at anytime to my detriment. Now I have a keen eye on what I’m eating. This has been extremely important in progressing and doing my best in CrossFit.
Can you describe your most memorable Desert CrossFit experience for us?
I recently won 1st place in the Paleo Challenge. Cheryl encouraged me to pair a Paleo lifestyle with CrossFit for best results and she was right. I went into the challenge to just lose a few pounds and learn a few Paleo recipes, but came out appreciating the change in my diet along with building camaraderie with others.
When have you used CrossFit outside the box?
The change has prompted others to ask, “What have you been doing”. I let them know it’s CrossFit. My Jiu-Jitsu game has been better than ever. I can take the strength and conditioning efforts of CrossFit to something I enjoy like Jiu-Jitsu and other activities in life.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
Jiu-Jitsu is a big part, along with triathlons and cycling. Looking forward to some Spartan races.
What are some of your CrossFit goals for the next year? Master my TECHNIQUE! This is challenging for me at times, though has become something I want to work for. Also, get at least 20 muscle-ups for time.
What are some of your favorite cheat meals and why?
I still embrace a Paleo lifestyle so cheat meals I don’t have. Although, I do splurge on some good dates after a hard WOD.
Any advice for people just getting started?
I tend to overthink many new things and can become my own worst enemy. Many people have this same mentality. It can be intimidating stepping out of the norm and into something new, but the first step into CrossFit will be unlike any other. You will have the potential to change the mindset of: DOUBT, NEXT-YEAR, CAN’T, EXCUSE, IT’S HARD, I’M NOT FIT ENOUGH, NO. This mindset will be gone!
